What we collect
When you visit the site
Like most websites, our hosting provider’s servers record technical data about each request, such as your IP address, browser type and the page you asked for. This is used to run and secure the site.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand which guides are read and how people find them. It collects information such as the pages you view, how long you stay, your approximate location, and your device and browser. We use this data only in aggregate, to improve the site. Comments
If you leave a comment, we store the name, email address and website you enter, your comment, and your IP address and browser details to help detect spam. Your email address is never shown publicly. An anonymized string made from your email address may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you have a profile picture.
Contact form
When you use our contact form, we receive your name, email address and message. We use them only to reply and to follow up on your request.
Cookies
We use cookies to remember your cookie choices, to measure site use with Google Analytics, and, if you leave a comment, to remember your details for next time. Where the law requires it, we ask for your consent through our cookie banner before setting non-essential cookies. You can change your choice at any time from the banner, or delete cookies in your browser settings.
Who we share data with
We don’t sell your personal data. We share it only with the services that help us run the site: our web hosting provider, Google (analytics) and Gravatar (comment avatars). We may also disclose data if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Comments and their metadata are kept for as long as the comment is published. Contact form messages are kept only as long as needed to deal with your request and any follow-up. Analytics data is kept for the retention period set in Google Analytics.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete the personal data we hold about you, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to withdraw consent. To make a request, contact us through our contact page. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
This site is intended for adults. We don’t knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle personal data, we will update this page and the date at the top.
